In cycling, hill climb time trials have consistently enjoyed immense popularity. Completing an ascent is a feat in itself for every cyclist, and while the first climb may not be about speed, subsequent attempts turn into a personal challenge. The Valnerina is an exceptionally beautiful and captivating valley, known for its natural beauty, history, and culture, with many remarkable traces of its past. The climbs are all demanding yet situated on lightly trafficked roads, making them accessible throughout the year. The aim is to transform the Valnerina and its adjacent valleys into an international hub for amateur cyclists and cycling tourists.
Day 1: Arrone - Acquaviva - Forca d'Arrone The journey begins near the village of Arrone, at the crossroads between Forca di Arrone and the road to Polino. The initial segment features a gentle rise until passing through the hamlets of Valleludra and Vallecupa. The real ascent starts just before the village of Rosciano, just past the Nera aqueduct, and continues steadily to the village of Polino, where the intermediate finish line is located. The ascent maintains a steady gradient with double-digit inclines through another 6 switchbacks, ending near the Acquaviva fountain where the finish line is set. Subsequently we return to Arrone to tackle the second climb towards Forca d'Arrone.
Day 2: Sant' Anatolia - Gavelli The route commences from the plaza below the village of Sant'Anatolia di Narco. After crossing the Nera bridge, the climb starts off moderately until it passes through the town. Following this, a challenging stretch begins with steep inclines up to the first four switchbacks, which then gives way to more manageable cycling, and even flattens for about 500 meters before reaching the intermediate finish at Caso. Beyond the village of Caso, the ascent resumes with two sets of switchbacks followed by a manageable section, leading into the final, particularly demanding stretch. This hill climb rivals those in the Alps, offering stunning scenery and significant elevation gain. It is challenging due to its length and steep gradients in both the first and final segments.
Day 3: Castel San Felice - Forca di Cerro - Ceselli - Monte San Vito Starting near the village of Castel San Felice, the route immediately confronts the most challenging section, leading up to the intermediate finish line just before the junction to the road from Piedipaterno. The route then turns left, passing the village of Grotti to ascend to the pass via a manageable climb. Among the three hill climbs, this one is relatively easier but the initial segment with consistent steep gradients should not be underestimated. Once you go back down to the valley you head towards the village of Ceselli, turning in the direction of Monte San Vito. After the bridge over the Nera you come across a small fountain and shortly after there is a sign indicating the starting point of the time trial. After a straight stretch (challenging) you have to face 14 hairpin bends before reaching the village of Monte San Vito.
