Capaci, known to the world for a mafia massacre, is much more than that: it is a lively town, with a strong social component, offering kilometres of beach, nature, caves, good food. Meeting and departure from the new Capaci station.
The first stop is at the Garden of Remembrance, built on the site where the motorway was ripped apart by TNT, in dutiful remembrance of the victims of the 1992 Capaci massacre. On that 23 May, as soon as they heard the explosion, the locals spontaneously rushed to the scene. Among them was Antonio, who as a young photographer witnessed an event that changed his life forever. His words take us immediately into a hot period of Italian history, and tell us a story that is still 'alive'. Together we reach the now famous Casina NO MAFIA: the climb that we make, in a sort of lay pilgrimage, takes us along the mountain to the place where the Mafiosi who set off the explosives were stationed.
A place that has become, thanks to the commitment of many, a symbol of resistance and redemption, and from where you can also admire one of the most beautiful views in the province of Palermo. And it was here, following the massacre, that a group of citizens from Capaci felt the need to send a clear message: armed with a ladder and paint, they wrote NO MAFIA in large letters on the wall, so that it would be clear to all those driving along the motorway that not all Sicilians are Mafiosi. On the way back to the starting point, those who wish to can enjoy a little relaxation in Capaci, with its small restaurants and typical delicatessens, and small gardens that have been redeveloped and equipped for games and sport by local associations.
The town has not forgotten the years of the massacre, but strongly wants to redeem itself and follow its tourist vocation, welcoming travellers from all over the world. The programme is subject to change in view of days and times when museums and restaurants are closed, as well as the availability of witnesses.
