Between 1700 and 1800, the Terni Valley witnessed the development of a unique page of the History of Art. Fascinated by nature, Mediterranean light and Italian landscapes many European painters created a huge artistic heritage "en plein air", directly in nature, representing in a realistic way, years before photography, fascinating glimpses of mythical places, historical, but also never previously represented.
The valley of the Nera river between Terni and Narni recorded the development of this new art of painting. Two days in the footsteps of the Plenarists to discover the symbolic places that have thrilled the artists, to compare the reproductions of the paintings with the landscape remained intact in many places, after 200 years.
Arrival in Narni, a splendid village of Roman origin, nestled on the Umbrian hills. Free time to discover the historic center, palaces and medieval churches. Guided tour of Narni Sotterranea, a mysterious hypogeal place, testimony of the Roman and medieval epoch, disturbing theater of the Inquisition Tribunal. Hotel accommodation, welcome dinner and overnight stay.
Breakfast at the hotel. At 09:00 meeting with the tour guide. Vision of the documentary "The enchanted valley" (about 40 minutes) which illustrates the history of the artistic current and the project that values its importance. At the end departure for an urban trekking route: from the historic center of Narni we arrive at the "Gole del Nera", a splendid naturalistic path that winds along the river of the same name. Stop at the ancient bridge of Augustus, on the ancient Via Flaminia which, thanks to the imposing Roman structure on the clear waters of the river Nera, has fascinated important artists such as Turner, Corot, Blechen, Bidauld and many others. Here, as in other points of our itinerary, you can admire the reproductions of the works, right in the precise point where the artist created them. Possibility to visit the Abbey of San Cassiano, an ancient Benedictine abbey dating back to the tenth century, located on Monte Santa Croce, in a panoramic position on the Gole del Nera.
At 12:30 departure for Piediluco Lake, lunch overlooking the lake based on local specialties. Tour by boat of the lake with photo stops. Guided tour of th e village and glimpses that have enchanted Jean-Baptiste Camile Corot, who in 1826 has created here the poignant painting "Piediluco Lake", followed a few years later by "Souvenir d'Italie". Return to hotel, dinner and overnight.
Breakfast at the hotel and checkout. At 09:30 meeting with the tour guide. Departure for Papigno, a small village along the Ternana valley, perched on a rock and surrounded by ancient woods. The Plenarists remained enchanted and dedicated so many works to make Papigno one of the most represented villages in the history of the landscape. Continue to the Marmore Falls visit of the Virtual Museum and 6D Cinema dedicated to the works of the Plenary in the territory. Entrance to the Marmore Falls Park to admire, from various corners, the majesty of the Velino river jump in the Nera: a place with magnetic appeal for the artists who created here many works "en plein air".
