The Scoppaturo or Valianara Canyon (1475 m) is a scenic highlight of this stage, featured in numerous films. We conclude the day's hike arriving in Castel del Monte (1346 m), the village of shepherds, and home to the Slow Food Presidium of Pecorino Canestrato. Dinner and overnight. Distance: 21 km Day
3: From Castel del Monte to Santo Stefano di Sessanio The second stage of the Gran Sasso Trail leads us through the discovery of two beautiful villages, Castel del Monte (1346 m) and Calascio (1210 m), revealing the mysteries of Rocca di Calascio (1464 m). Heading south, we pass through fields and farms, ascending to Colle della Battaglia (1180 m), an ancient settlement of the Vestini people. Continuing, we reach Calascio, a charming village perched on the southeastern slope of the mountain, dominated by the impressive Rocca. Exploring the ancient fortress and visiting the Renaissance Church of Santa Maria della Pietà, we are transported to distant times, savoring the cultural richness of these mountain lands. Distance: 15 km
Day 4: From Santo Stefano di Sessanio to Barisciano Before leaving Rocca di Calascio (1464 m), we explore the fortress and enjoy a breathtaking view of the highest peaks of the Gran Sasso range. The route to our destination, Barisciano (940 m), is simple and panoramic, suitable for families with children. Walking on a trail for five kilometers, we overlook the valley to the south, elegantly shaped by terraces. Arriving at Santo Stefano di Sessanio (1251 m), the end of the third stage. Distance: 10 km
Day 5: From Barisciano to Fonte Cerreto/Assergi After exploring every enchanting corner of Santo Stefano di Sessanio (1251 m), we embark on the fourth stage of the Gran Sasso Trail, mostly downhill, reaching Barisciano (940 m). Here, we can visit the small church of Buon Consiglio or Capo di Serra, dating back to the 13th century. Leaving Barisciano (940 m) northward, following the trail signs, we encounter the former Convent of San Colombo (1088 m). Progressing uphill for most of the stage, we cross a valley leading to a junction with a small lake, Fonte Vedice, used to water grazing animals. Following a northwest direction, we climb a slight incline to reach the Temple of Sant'Eusanio (1402 m), solitary and silent. Further on, we cross the Piano di Fugno (1373 m), a wide and spectacular plateau where rainwater converges to form the small Lake Filetto, often frozen in winter. We cross the provincial road from the Aquila side and follow the valley leading to Rifugio Montecristo, just in time for a snack. From here, climbing slightly, we reach the ridge just above Valle Fredda. We begin to descend and, in just four kilometers, reach Fonte Cerreto (1115 m), where refreshments, accommodation facilities, and the cable car base are located. Distance: 17 km
