Due to its plano-altimetric characteristics, the Spoleto-Norcia railway can be defined as "alpine" and represents a small jewel of railway engineering. In fact, along the relatively short route of 51 kilometers, 19 tunnels were built, of which that of a pass, near Caprareccia, of almost 2 kilometers. The structure 24 is completed by bridges and viaducts, engineering futuristic and of great architectural value, with various helical lines, similar to those often found in Swiss railways, and slopes of up to 45 per thousand in the stretch between Spoleto and the valley of the Nera river.
That's why it was also called the Gotthard of Umbria. For economic reasons it was armed with Vignole type rails, while the narrow gauge was mainly adopted to contain the radius of curvature in many sections of the route. in this way the construction costs were kept lower than what would have been incurred in the case of the ordinary track gauge, at the price, however, of a considerable tortuosity of the track.
