This itinerary covers the Northern section of the traditional Pathways running along the trails of St. Francis known also as Cammino di San Francesco. It departs from the sanctuary of La Verna, located at the Sourthern border of the National Park of the Casentinesi Woods, one of the largest forest areas of Europe, rich of vegetation and animals.
From the Casentino district you will reach the chain of the Alpe della Luna (natural regional reserve) with high peaks covered with forests of beech and black hornbeam trees.
Will then proceed across the High Valley of Tiber River (Alta Valle del Tevere), a land crossed since ancient times by the pilgrimage pathways of the Via Romea. The river becomes wider while descending towards South. Also this area is very rich of forests of different types of trees populated by roe deers, hares, goshawks, wild boars.
The last part to be crossed before reaching Assisi is the Eugubino, the district of the imposing town of Gubbio, with high mountains, rich of architectural and artistic treasures. Since ancient times the area has been crossed by roman roads leading from the Capital of the Empire towards the Adriatic Sea. Gubbio, is the most important town of this corner of Umbria region.
