Starting from the sunny town of Lienz in Eastern Tyrol along the stages of this journey, you will discover the surroundings of Lienz, in Virgental at the foot of Mount Großvenediger, Matrei in Osttirol, and Spittal an der Drau in Carinthia. Midweek, a transfer will take you to Alta Pusteria in Dobbiaco in South Tyrol, the starting point for the following days. From here, you will reach Cortina d'Ampezzo, Brunico, and Bressanone. On the last day, starting from Alta Pusteria, you will cross the border with Austria to return to the starting point in Lienz. This bike trip is a diverse route that combines nature and culture. The route follows cycling paths or very quiet secondary roads, through small villages and idyllic landscapes. Suitable for ages 14 and up.
Day 1: Arrival in Lienz Individual arrival at the hotel in Lienz.
Day 2: Circular tour in Lienz to Lake Tristach (approx. 28 km) Starting from Lienz, cycle to the Galitzenklamm gorge, a well-known water educational trail. From Galitzenklamm, cycle leisurely to Lake Tristach/Tristacher See, where you can take a refreshing swim. The route also leads to Lavant, where you can visit a late Roman and medieval settlement mound. Another must-visit site is Aguntum, an ancient Roman city located in Dölschach.
Day 3: Lienz - Matrei in Osttirol - Virgental - Lienz (approx. 52 km) In the morning, a transfer is planned to the end of Virgental. Virgental is located in the center of the Hohe Tauern National Park. The cycling path descends gently through Prägraten, at the foot of Mount Großvenediger, to Matrei in Osttirol and finally to Lienz. You will pedal through picturesque mountain landscapes and charming villages.
Day 4: Lienz - Spittal an der Drau - Lienz (approx. 74 km) Along the cycling path, you will find picturesque villages such as Oberdrauburg and Sachsenburg, with their beautiful historic centers. Near Greifenburg Lake, where you can take a swim, the route continues through meadows and rural landscapes, framed by forests and alpine meadows. At the end of the stage, you will return to Lienz by train from Spittal an der Drau.
Day 5: Lienz - Dobbiaco - Cortina - Dobbiaco (approx. 59 km) In the morning, depart by train from Lienz to Dobbiaco. From Dobbiaco, cycle past Lake Dobbiaco/Toblacher See to the panoramic point of the Tre Cime, then continue to Lake Dürrensee and on to the highest point Gemärk/Cimabanche. From there, the cycling path leads you downhill to Cortina, through the galleries of the former railway, specially illuminated for cyclists.
Day 6: Dobbiaco - Brunico - Bressanone - Dobbiaco (approx. 72 km) Starting from the highest point in Dobbiaco, the cycling path descends to the Rienz River through valley villages to Brunico, a very welcoming town. Visit Brunico Castle with the Messner Mountain Museum and the Folklore Museum of Dietenheim. Later, the route continues downhill to Bressanone, one of the most beautiful cities in the Alps. From Bressanone, take a train back to Dobbiaco.
Day 7: Dobbiaco - Sillian - Lienz (approx. 49 km) Leave Dobbiaco and reach San Candido before crossing the nearby Italy-Austria border near Winnebach to reach Sillian. In Sillian, you'll find the Loacker company with its delicious biscuits and excellent cappuccino. Cycle downhill along the Drava River to Lienz, the starting point of the tour.
Day 8: Departure Individual departure or the possibility to extend the stay.
