This panoramic trek will take you from the heart of the Kitzbühel Alps to the National Park of the High Tauern and the Tre Cime, part of the UNESCO World Heritage. Through the National Park of the High Tauern with its glacial valleys, you will cross the Austrian-Italian border at Forcella di Casies to enter the world of the Dolomites, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2009. The National Park of the High Tauern, with its glacial valleys and diverse flora, will gradually transform into a rougher terrain with steeper walls, and in the background, you will begin to catch glimpses of the iron-like peaks of the Dolomites, getting closer with each step. Finally entering Italy, amidst lush meadows and mountain huts, you will descend into the Val di Casies, characterized by small clusters of sunlit, flower-bedecked houses amidst fields of flowers and aromatic herbs. The end of your vacation is not far, but before concluding this experience, a final highlight awaits: the tour of the Tre Cime, like the rest of the Dolomites. The trek takes place on well-marked mountain and hiking trails and is suitable for those in good general physical condition. Climbing experience is not necessary. The more challenging ascents are tackled with a cable car, and it is possible to shorten longer stages with public transportation and/or taxis. Day 1: Kitzbühel Individual arrival at the hotel in Kitzbühel, one of the most famous ski resorts in Austria and at the same time a sought-after summer destination with the famous alpine flower garden, golf courses, bathing lakes, shops, and local establishments.
Day 2: Kitzbühel \" Aurach \" Jochberg (approx. altitude difference + 540 m/ - 380 m; approx. 4-5 hours - Hahnenkamm variant: altitude difference +680 m/ -1.110m / approx. 5-6 hours) Starting from Kitzbühel, you will walk comfortably at the foot of the Kitzbüheler Südberge. You will pass through small villages and picturesque farms with flowered balconies. A recommended stop is Aurach in Tyrol, a village with an enviable position at the foot of the Kitzbüheler Südberge, known for its authentic and special character. The renowned artist and painter Alfons Walde, originally from Kitzbühel, often chose the church and the village square of Aurach as the subjects of his works, giving the village immortal fame.
Day 3: Jochberg \" Gauxjoch \" Hartkaserhöhe \" Mittersill (approx. altitude difference + 820 m / - 800 m, approx. 5 - 6 hours; or approx. + 820 m / - 250 m, approx 4 - 5 hours) Short transfer to the starting point of the stage. Through lush alpine pastures below the peaks, you will continue your trek in the magnificent alpine landscape. Enjoy the tranquility of the scenery, observing the local flora and fauna. Using the Gauxjoch ski lift, you will reach the Trattenbach alpine pasture and the Hartkaserhöhe summit. Along the ridge runs the border between the Tyrol and Salzburg provinces. If you prefer to avoid the descent from the Resterhöhe summit, you can use the Panoramabahn Kitzbühler Alpen II (not included). Return to Mittersill by bus.
Day 4: Mittersill \" Tauernhaus \" Venedigerblick \" Matrei/Matreier Tauernhaus (Innergschlöß: approx. altitude difference +/-650m; approx. 4-5 hours Variant: Hintersee - St.Pöltener Hütte - Tauernhaus approx. altitude difference + 1.240 m / - 1.040 m; approx. 6-7 hours) In the morning, transfer from Mittersill to Matreier Tauernhaus. If you prefer, you can choose to walk from Hintersee Lake through the Felbertauern Pass to the St. Pöltener Hütte refuge to Matreier Tauernhaus. Initially, the trail ascends through meadows and larch forests to Venedigerblick. At the top of the ascent, you will enjoy a magnificent view of the peaks of Großvenediger. Continuing on a beautiful marked trail, with Großvenediger and the surrounding mountains as a backdrop, you will walk towards the village of Innergschlöss, then return to Matreier Tauernhaus through beautiful alpine pastures. From here, you will reach Matrei by public transport.
Day 5: Matrei/Matreier Tauernhaus \" Mariahilf \" Val di Casies (approx. altitude difference + 780 m, - 740 m; approx. 4.5 \" 5.5 hours) By bus, you will reach Mariahilf, where your walk will begin. Progressing through lush forests, you will climb to reach the first alpine pastures and the Forcella di Casies, which is rich in legendary stories of smugglers. This was indeed a smuggling route between Italy and Austria, especially in the 1920s and 1930s. The view here extends over the valley to the Dolomites of Braies. Walking in the Val di Casies, you will encounter various alpine huts and settlements: Oberberg, Kradorferalm, and Messnerhütte are just a few of them. We recommend a delicious break; the local dishes are simply too tasty to resist! Enjoy speck or cheese dumplings, Kaiserschmarrn, and apple strudel.
Day 6: Val di Casies \" Frondeign \" Wahlen \" Dobbiaco (approx. altitude difference + 470 m/ - 440 m; approx. 3 - 4 hours; or approx. + 850 m/ - 810 m; approx. 5-6 hours) Today's stage will take you further south, and the Dolomites will be within reach! From Val Casies, the trail will steadily ascend to Frondeign as you proceed through the shaded forest. If you prefer a more athletic version, you can head towards Schuieralm; the trail descends to Wahlen, and the valley will widen, offering a magnificent view of Neunerkofel, Haunold, Dürrenstein, and the Höhlenstein valley.
Day 7: Dobbiaco \" Tre Cime \" Dobbiaco (approx. +/- 350 m; approx. 3 - 4 hours; or altitude difference + 1,025 m/- 125 m; approx. 4.5 - 5.5 hours) Using one of the frequent public buses, you will reach the starting point of the stage, the Auronzo Refuge (ticket not included). Along the southern slope of the Tre Cime, you will first walk towards the Lavaredo Refuge and then to Mount Paterno, a front during World War I; from here, at 2,454 meters above sea level, you can enjoy a magnificent view of the north walls of the Tre Cime. Here begins the hike along the northern side with the typical panorama of the Tre Cime. Through a hiking trail to Lange Alm and passing through the western side, you will return to the starting point. If you want a more active day, you can take the bus to the panoramic point of the Tre Cime and then climb to Lange Alm, complete the Tre Cime circuit, and take the bus back to Dobbiaco (ticket not included).
