Starting in Terni , the route crosses the birth places of the Protomartyrs Berardo, Adiuto, Accursio, Pietro, and Ottone, ending at the Antonian Sanctuary of the Franciscan Protomartyrs in Terni, tracing the footsteps of Saint Francis and leaving an indelible mark. This path invites participants to rediscover the thrill of adventure in contact with nature and to explore the rich Italian cultural heritage. On the trails of the Terni area of Umbria, where beauty discreetly and humbly merges with the sacred. A detailed map will guide you through Franciscan sites, providing tourist information about the route, distances, travel times, and highlights of the main sites to visit.
Day 1: Terni - Calvi dell'Umbria Starting from Terni, the track winds through nature. At the Church of Santa Maria della Pace, you can admire the impressive fresco cycle on the Franciscan Protomartyrs by artist Stefano di Stasio. Along the way, visit the ruins of the ancient Benedictine Abbey of San Benedetto in Fundis and the Monastery of San Simeone, where the community of the Rebuilders in Prayer is now based. The journey reaches Stroncone, the birthplace of Saint Ottone and one of Umbria's most beautiful medieval villages. The route then takes a challenging stretch from Stroncone to Calvi dell'Umbria, notable for its continuous ups and downs through the hills and a steep ascent to Calvi. Visit Aguzzo, the city of Saint Accursio, a Franciscan protomartyr. Along the way, visit the Hermitage of Sant'Urbano (Sacro Speco), where Saint Francis stayed. The place was dubbed "Cana of Umbria" after a miracle performed by the Saint, turning water into wine. The track ends at Calvi dell'Umbria, the city of Saint Berardo. Day 2: Calvi dell'Umbria - Narni - San Gemini The route is flat but challenging due to its length and the numerous hills encountered. Start at the Church of San Michele Arcangelo, an ancient Benedictine abbey in Schifanoia, then continue to Santa Pudenziana, a church of Roman origin, and the church of Sant'Angelo in Massa, originally a Benedictine abbey, finishing at the impressive Albornoz Fortress. Narni, the land of Saint Adiuto, is a medieval town rich in historical, artistic, and cultural heritage; famous for its beautiful cathedral and the renowned Corsa all'Anello. The track towards San Gemini passes by the stunning 10th-century Abbey of San Cassiano (where time seems to have stood still!), the ancient Sanctuary of Madonna del Ponte, a pilgrimage site since ancient times, and in La Cerqua, the Sanctuary of Santa Maria della Quercia. The route finally reaches San Gemini, a charming medieval village rich in history and birthplace of Saint Pietro, a Franciscan protomartyr. The stage ends at the Church of San Francesco. Day 3: San Gemini - Terni This stage is challenging due to the steep ascent to the Hermitage of Portaria, also known as the Romita di Cesi, and the subsequent descent to Cesi. Visit the splendid archaeological site of Carsulae (an ancient Roman city). Reach the Romita di Cesi, an ancient Franciscan hermitage shrouded in the silence of the woods. Tradition holds that here Francis composed the Exhortatio ad Laudem Dei, considered a precursor to the Canticle of Brother Sun. Hospitality is available. The route reaches Cesi, a village rich in history overlooking the Terni basin. The stage concludes at the Church of Santa Maria Assunta. From Cesi to Terni, visit the Sanctuary of Santa Maria dell'Oro, where the ancient Franciscan convent commissioned by Saint Bernardino of Siena once stood. Arrive at the Church of Saint Anthony of Padua \" the Antonian Sanctuary of the Protomartyrs \" the destination of the pilgrimage, where relics of the Saints are kept and the altar is adorned with paintings by Piero Casentini.
