The strip of land between Lecce (Apulia region) and the sea is a picturesque area with the typical landscape of the Salento district. It also features important evidences of the past.
Proceeding towards North-East of Lecce along white roads surrounded by millenial olive groves, will see many ancient "masserie" (manor farms) dating back to 16th / 18th century. These were originally just rural complexes for the agricultural production. Then, after their fortification, they became strategic outposts for the defense of the region from the Turkish invasions.
There will also be the chance to admire the church of S. Maria d'Aurio (12th century) and the marvellous byzantine Abbey of S. Maria a Cerrate. The excursion will also pass by the naturalistic preserve of the Rauccio. Lastly, will stop en route to take a bath at one of the picturesque shores of Lecce.
