Explore the Brigands' Path accompanied by an expert guide to discover a 7-stage circular itinerary through the green forests of the Apennines. This trek in Abruzzo and Lazio is a journey back in time. Along the Brigands' Path, we will visit small villages where you can savor local traditional dishes and stay in small family-run accommodations. A hidden corner of Italy, still off the tourist routes.
1st day: Arrival around lunchtime in Sante Marie, and by approximately 3 PM, we start the warm-up stage of the Brigands' Path to Santo Stefano. During this trekking itinerary, we will be guests at accommodation facilities or private homes where we can enjoy the products of this region. Route info: Distance 6 km, elevation gain +380 -150 meters.
2nd day: We reach the village of Nesce in the province of Rieti, passing through one valley to another among chestnut and oak forests, finally arriving in the small village where local families will cook local products for us. Route info: Distance 14 km, elevation gain +420 -630 meters.
3rd day: Our group trek takes us through the Salto Valley, reaching the characteristic town of Villerose. After a few kilometers, we enter the Duchessa Reserve and then proceed to the village of Torano, where we will stay for two nights. Route info: Distance 16 km, elevation gain +400 -410 meters.
4th day: Today, a slightly more challenging stage awaits us towards Lake Duchessa, one of the highest lakes in the Apennines, surrounded by the Morrone and Murolungo Mountains. From here, we can enjoy a special view towards Mount Velino, admire the griffins nesting, and listen to the stories of the shepherd Americo, one of the most authentic souls of the region. In Torano, a typical dinner with products from the Lazio/Abruzzo Apennines awaits us. Route info: Distance 15 km, elevation gain +950 -950 meters.
5th day: Starting from Cartore (reached by transfer from Torano), we enter the Duchessa Reserve, walking through the woods to Passo le Forche, admiring Mount Velino on our left. From there, we descend towards Santa Maria in Valle Porclaneta, where we will visit the magnificent 10th-century Romanesque church. After passing through the village of Rosciolo, we continue our trekking towards Massa d'Albe, where we will spend the night. Route info: Distance 15 km, elevation gain +510 -600 meters.
6th day: We continue along the Brigands' Path, and from Massa d'Albe, we reach the excavations of the ancient Roman city of Alba Fucens. We then descend to the valley passing through Magliano dei Marsi and continuing towards Scurcola Marsicana, a village characterized by ancient churches and medieval manors. Night in a B&B with a tasty dinner based on organic products at km 0. Route info: Distance 21 km, elevation gain +410 -420 meters.
7th day: We will cross several villages and ascend to the ruins of San Donato Castle, from where we will enjoy a wonderful view of Marsica and Velino! We conclude our trekking tour between Abruzzo and Lazio, returning to Sante Marie. Route info: Distance 22 km, elevation gain +570 -480 meters.
