Alviano

Alviano is a characteristic small town of medieval origins. It is located in western Umbria, on a hill in the Tevere Valley near the Amerini hills, and surrounded by the "calanchi", a geomorphological phenomenon of erosion of the colllinari slopes, which form a landscape of great charm.

The village is surrounded by defensive walls, still has its clear medieval urban imprint, with a compact shape, a rather dense but regular road system, almost totally unchanged despite the rebuilding of several building complexes.

The most significant building in the city is the Castle of Alviano, an imposing medieval military fortress that houses inside two interesting museums in permanent preparation: the Museum of the rural civilization "The earth and the instrument" and the Multimedia Museum of Bartolomeo Alviano and the Umbrian Captains of Ventura.

The village is one of the municipalities of the Tevere River Park, which stretches for about 50km reaching the Natural Oasis of Alviano, important for the conservation of nature and the territory.

The Oasis, which occupies about 900 hectares, was born artificially in 1963 after the damming of the river Tiber made by ENEL, and in a short time the sediments accumulated by the river have contributed to the birth of various wetlands and a hygrophilous wood, attracting many species of waterfowl. Today, there are over 10,000 species that stop here every year, choosing the oasis as an ideal shelter to reproduce. The oasis, not surprisingly, is the ideal place for Birdwatching.

Another characteristic feature of the territory are the Cretan houses, poor country houses used by farmers in the nineteenth century to rest and shelter during the long months of the work of the fields built with the simple materials they had available: clay, straw, rainwater and wood. Some of these houses have been renovated and used as a refreshment point for picnics in the open air.
