Tarquinia

Tarquinia is a town in the province of Viterbo, Lazio, overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea. It is located on a hill at 132 m of dominant altitude from the left the low course of the river Marta, near the Via Aurelia, in the Lazio Maremma.

It was one of the oldest and most important Etruscan settlements and linked to Rome since very ancient times. In fact, it gave this city the dynasty of the Etruscan kings (Tarquinio Prisco, Servio Tullio and Tarquinio il Superbo) which played a role of primary importance in the history of the Latin city (late 7th and 6th centuries BC). Tarquinia entered the war several times with Rome and from this it was finally subdued after the battle of Sentino, at the beginning of the III century BC. in 295 BC Since then Tarquinia was part of the Roman territories in the royal VII Etruria.

Behind the hill of Tarquinia stands the Monterozzi hills where there is the ancient and famous Etruscan Necropolis.

One of the most prosperous economic sectors is tourism thanks to the remains of the Etruscan civilization present on the territory and thanks to the Lido of Tarquinia, which makes it a popular seaside resort.
