Deruta

Deruta is a small town that stands on a hill at the foot of a system of reliefs, surrounded by a thick Mediterranean scrub that divides the wide and fertile plain of the Tevere and part of the Umbrian Valley.
The municipal territory goes from 170 meters s.l.m. of the area of the "Borgo" to the 400 meters of the fraction of Castelleone, up to 650 meters of Perugia Vecchia, from where you can admire a fantastic panorama that goes from Peglia Mount to Perugia, from which it is 15 km, ranging from the Tevere plain to the hills in front of it.

Everyone in the world knows Deruta for its precious ceramics of ancient origin and the numerous testimonies, kept in the most important museums or private collections, which document how the ceramics has been produced without interruption from the Middle Age to today and how, especially between the centuries XV and XVI, was fundamental for the local economy. All thanks to skilled craftsmen.

The name comes from "Diruta", that is "ruined", referring to the escape of the Perugians from their city, burned by Octavian in 40 BC. during the civil war in which he opposed Lucio Antonio. The inhabitants of the destroyed city, "diruta", settled on the hill of today's Deruta, also called "old Perugia".
