To see: town & cities

Torgiano

Torgiano is an ancient river village built as a ring of the defensive belt of the town of Perugia at the end of the thirteenth century. It was a fortified village and followed the fate of the dominant city.

Absolutely to visit the historic center from Piazza Matteotti - where once stood the ancient Porta del Forno - in "Corso Vittorio Emanuele II". On the left is the Oratory of Misericordia, which is flanked by the Church of San Bartolomeo rebuilt in the eighteenth century on the thirteenth-century parish (to be seen inside the Christ Deposed by the Cross by Felice Pellegrini, of the school of Barocci, 1588). Opposite Manganelli Palace, already owned by the Baglioni family, object of integral restoration; on the right, the Manifatture Stocchi building and the ancient residence of the Falcinelli family.

Passing through Mazzini street you arrive at the Comunale Palace, which appears in the early twentieth century forms, in the corner with  Baglioni Square. On the other side of the square is the baroque Graziani Baglioni Palace, one of the main architectural emergencies of the city, home to the Wine Museum. On the main floor there is a frescoed gallery from the late seventeenth century, a rich library and numerous rooms furnished with period furniture. At the end of the walls that surround the palace garden, you can see the ancient Scuderie, now home of the Pro Loco.

At the end of Corso Vittorio Emanuele II, on the right is the Oratory of St. Anthony, which has a fresco on the outside representing a Madonna with Child attributed to the school of Domenico Alfani, the famous Perugian painter of the first half of the sixteenth century of Raffaello.
Continuing into Piazza Umberto I and taking Via Garibaldi, the ancient residence of Palazzo Graziani is on the right and, immediately after, the seventeenth-century Church of Santa Maria nel Castello, connected to the medieval hospital opened on the homonymous square.
