Spoleto

Spoleto is a town in the province of Perugia, in Umbria, with over 38 thousand inhabitants. It is located at the southern end of the Umbra Valley, a vast floodplain generated by a lake that dried up in the Middle Age thanks to reclamation works.

It was a town inhabited since prehistoric times. The first evidence of settlements date back to the Bronze Age. In 241 B.C. became a Roman colony. His influence as a Duchy of central-southern Italy was remarkable at the time of the Lombard domination.

In 1155 the city was destroyed by the troops of Federico Barbarossa. It was then contested between the Empire and the Church, it was aggregated to the latter by Pope Innocent III in 1198 and, finally, in 1247. Devastated by the conflicts between Guelphs and Ghibellines, it was reappreciated by Cardinal Egidio Albornoz who in 1359 began construction of the Rocca as the seat of the governors of the city; it was assured to the Church and made important center of the Papal State, that it sent her authoritative governors, among which also Lucrezia Borgia (1499).

From the Renaissance onwards, Spoleto gradually transformed from a predominantly strategic center to a cultural center. On November 4, 1860, the city was annexed to the Kingdom of Italy. After the unification, which became Perugia, capital of Umbria, Spoleto progressively lost its role as an administrative center, thus suffering damage to the economy.

The most representative item of the Spoleto economic sector is certainly that of tourism. Spoleto is today one of the main tourist centers of Umbria, internationally known thanks to the great historical, artistic, cultural and natural heritage that the city and its territory offer.
