Avigliano Umbro

Avigliano Umbro rises on the hill of San Rocco, to 441 meters of altitude, in the territory between the splendid districts of the Arnolfe Lands and the Amerino Acquasparta to 441 meters above sea level.

The village is surrounded by a frame of mountains and forests of rare beauty.

It stands on the hill of San Rocco and was inhabited since ancient times: recent discoveries in the Grotta Bella of Santa Restituta testify human settlements dating back to the Neolithic period.

The site of greatest naturalistic and scientific interest is the Dunarobba Forest, which collects a series of large tree-tree trunks dating back to the Pliocene (about 2/3 million years ago, which the particular characteristics of the clay soil have petrified.

In Roman times the village was located along the ancient Via Amerina. In the Middle Ages it was a fundamental center of the Terre Arnolfe, also mentioned in the Regatta of the Abbey of Farfa. After the dissolution of the lordship of the Arnolfi (XII century) it was under the dominion of Todi. From the old feudal castle you can still see the walls, a mighty cylindrical tower and the entrance door (Porta Vecchia) surmounted by the eagle, emblem of the city of Todi with open wings, on which two eagles are depicted, representing the cities submissive of Amelia and Terni.

The parish church of the SS. Trinity, built in the first half of the seventeenth century, contains within it praiseworthy frescoes by Bartolomeo Barbiani da Montepulciano and a valuable painting by Polinori, representing the Madonna of the Rosary with Child, Saints and Mysteries.

Characteristic is its liberty style theater, built in 1928 by a group of citizens of Avigliano Umbro associated in the cultural circle "Volontà e Azione". Since then it has hosted theatrical, musical and conference events.

In the surroundings there are numerous naturalistic excursions that cross wooded areas, hills and valleys through the territories of Melezzole, Sismano, Toscolano and others.

The Proloco of Avigliano Umbro is very active and provides information and suggestions for visiting passing clients and for those looking for accommodation for longer stays. He can be contacted by email at prolocoavigliano@libero.it
