Siena

Siena, the provincial capital of Toscana, universally known for its historical, artistic, natural heritage, for its unmistakable urban décor and of course for the famous Palio. Its historic center is one of the sites proclaimed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. It stands in the middle of a vast hilly landscape, a destination for tourists from all over the world.

Siena was founded by the emperor Augustus as a Roman colony with the name of Saena Iulia. Probably the foundation of the city was older given the findings of the historic center dating back to the Etruscan civilization. In the tenth century it became an important medieval civilization thanks to its strategic position, at the center of important trade routes that led to Rome. Always deployed against Florence for the northern dominions of Tuscany, after the plague of 1348 began the slow decline of the Republic of Siena. In 1555 the city surrendered in front of the army of Charles V who had the Florentines as allies. The territory of Siena became a fief of the Medici family of Florence.

Today the city is mainly famous all over the world for its Palio which takes place in Del Campo Square every year on two dates, July 2nd and August 16th. The Palio is a revisitation of an ancient Medieval Joust in which the horses are mounted "bareback" and in which the different districts of the city are challenged.

The culinary tradition of the city is also very old. Among the specialties are the "pici", big handmade spaghetti, or the "ribollita", a vegetable and bean soup served with toasted bread. The wines, produced throughout the province, are celebrated all over the world such as Chianti, Brunello of Montalcino or Vino Nobile of Montepulciano.
