Lucca

Lucca is one of the provincial capitals of the Tuscany region. It stands on the left bank of the river Serra in the northwestern part of the region.

In the sixth century Lucca became the capital of the Lombard dukedom of Tuscia and then developed in the twelfth century as a municipality and then a republic. In 773 Lombard dominion fell on Lucca, and the Carolingian domination began, thanks to the defeat of the dukes of Lucca by the hand of Charlemagne. The city consolidated its prominent position in the Longobard era, developing thanks to commercial activities and textile production, for which it became a city famous throughout Europe and allowed significant economic growth thanks to the launch of the silk factory. The high quality of the product was due to the fineness of the material and the beauty of the decorations. In the Middle Ages the city grew considerably in relation also to the ancient Via Francigena, of which Lucca was an important stage on the religious level due to the presence of the Holy Face, a venerated relic representing the crucified Christ in the Cathedral of Lucca. Despite the continuous vicissitudes linked to the struggles between Guelphs and Ghibellines, Lucca in the XIV century became one of the most important cities of the Italian Middle Ages.

With the Vienna Congress the Duchy of Lucca was born, which then became, in 1847, the Grand Duchy of Tuscany. In 1860 it was annexed to the Kingdom of Sardinia.

It is one of the main Italian cities of art with its walls of the XV - XVII century with a perimeter of about 4233 meters, its historic center that maintains almost the original appearance, the numerous medieval churches, Renaissance palaces and much other.
