Bagnoregio

Bagnoregio is a town in the province of Viterbo in Lazio. It is located on the border with Umbria and near Orvieto and Bolsena lake. In ancient times it was known as Bagnorea. The name probably derives from Balneum Regis, referring to the presence of thermal waters with particular therapeutic properties.

The name is handed down at least from the Lombard period. According to a legend, in fact, King Desiderio would have been cured of a serious illness thanks to the thermal waters that flowed near the town. Some findings from prehistoric times give way to more numerous Etruscan testimonies in the Civita area.

With the collapse of the Roman Empire Bagnoregio was dominated by Visigoths, Goths, Byzantines, Lombards and Franks (Charlemagne): the latter gave it to the temporal power of the Popes. The Church subjugated the Bagnorese population to the lordship of the Counts Monaldeschi della Cervara, which proved to be unsuitable, and forced the city to revolt, the success of which resulted in the establishment of the Free Commune.

Bagnoregio knows the Franciscan preaching in the thirteenth century and gave birth to St. Bonaventura, one of the Fathers of the Church and a fundamental figure in the constitution of the Franciscan Order.

Since 1600, during the Easter period, Bagnoregio has set up the traditional God Friday Procession, with over 300 costumed figures. The event links the entire population around the wooden sculpture of the S.S. Crucifix of Civita in a splendid play of lights and sound effects that complete the work of the figures.

Near the town are the ancient village of Civita di Bagnoregio, isolated and semi-abandoned due to the collapse of the main access road to the old city. The village is only accessible via a pedestrian bridge and the guided tour through its narrow streets is very suggestive. During the Christmas period in Civita di Bagnoregio the extraordinary event of the Living Nativity is renewed.

The town of Montefiascone, rich in history and best known for its renowned white wine, is also near Bagnoregio.
