Duomo di Orvieto

So famous in the world is the Cathedral of Orvieto, which not many people find themselves in the city of the Rupe as attracted by its glorious symbolic monument.
We like to think that you will come to Orvieto to know also other treasures, but there is no doubt that the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta - simply the Duomo for Orvieto and not only - of Orvieto considered the greatest and undisputed wonder.

Celebrated over the centuries by artists, writers and common mortals, the Cathedral will not fail to surprise you even if you are well documented and have already read a lot, even if you have already enjoyed images and postcards. From whatever direction you will come, you will be amazed at its bold and slender proportions - an unmistakable hymn to the desire for infinity and ascent into the sky - and its marvelous and suggestive uniqueness, which escape any simplistic classification of style.

Entitled to the Vergine Assunta, the Cathedral is everywhere recognized by the highest artistic achievements of the late Middle Ages in Italy, where they blend, sometimes the Roman basilica tradition and create a whole unique and original, the feeling that animated the great European cathedrals of the two -three century, the architectural solutions of the mendicant orders and the figurative motifs of the French Gothic.
From the Via Postierla, facing the majestic simplicity of the southern side, enhanced by the green of the lawn and the imposing corner pillar, or the front of Via Maitani, slowly discovering the mosaic's triumph of the façade, or by the narrow winding Via del Duomo, which according to a prospective ritual very dear to the medieval urban planning slowly discovers the grandiose effect of the façade, the isolation of the Duomo in the square is evident and, the medieval town planner Alberto Satolli is well known, "the emptiness of the plane which envelops the building from the measured surrounding space is the perfect one that enhances its architecture ".

Built over several centuries, from the thirteenth to the seventeenth, with contributions reaching up to the modern XX, the vast palimpsest of the Assunta Cathedral its construction with multiple motifs: not only religious, as tradition dictates, which links the Cathedral to the miracle of 'Eucharist occurred in Bolsena in 1263, but more worn political, urban, social and artistic.
