Sports parachuting: how to practice

Parachuting involves jumping from an altitude between 1000 and 4500 meters, then opening the parachute generally at a recommended altitude of 900-800 meters. In the case of training launches, the altitude shall be 1500 metres, provided that the minimum opening height of the parachute is fixed at 750 metres.

The tandem parachute is built to support two people harnessed together, giving the opportunity to jump from the plane harnessed to an instructor. Being a variant created to make feel the thrill of the launch even to those who do not have a specific training, the flight is stabilized by a small parachute, called drogue, which will then serve to the opening of the main one. This type of launch allows to fly for about sixty seconds at 50 m/s, about 180 km/h, until the instructor opens the parachute at the expected altitude of 1500 meters. It goes without saying that the tandem parachute is much larger than a normal one, the size between 360 and 400 square feet, allows you to support two people.

In addition to the tandem launch, there are several different variants of sport parachuting, of which we briefly mention:

Style. It is the first true sport discipline of modern parachuting, and is purely individual. It consists in fact in a launch from an altitude of 2200 meters, altitude that provides about thirty seconds of free fall. At this juncture a sequence of 6 evolutions and vaults must be performed in the shortest possible time, which are taken from the ground from a video station and subsequently judged by a jury.

Landing precision, discipline born practically in conjunction with the Style and consisting also in an individual performance. The launches in this case take place from about 1000 meters, with the objective to hit with the heel, during landing, a target consisting of a red disk of 2 cm.

Combined, that is the combination of the two preceding disciplines.

Paraski, born from the need to develop the alpine rescue and consisting in the combination of a giant slalom ski race with a precision race landing in the mountains, flat and slope.

Formations in Free Fall. Teams composed of two or more parachutists make up several prefixed figures during free fall, following the criteria of speed, precision or style according to the race categories.

Canopy related Work. Teams of two or more paratroopers undertake to form open parachute formations, with handholds and feet on the veil and on the suspenders. This variant is highly spectacular for visibility from the ground, although dangerous for the possibility of collisions.

Free Style. In this discipline, the paratroopers, during the free fall, perform in free-hand figures that simulate exercises of dance or artistic gymnastics.

Skysurf. It's the discipline made famous by the great and late Patrick de gayardon, which consists in facing free fall with a reduced version of the snowboard.

Speed skydiving. It is the extreme practice of speed parachuting, where the athlete places himself in aerodynamic position to reach the maximum possible speed within the 1.700 meters of altitude, after which begins the deceleration phase and then proceed to the opening of the parachute. In this case the launch takes place from an altitude of 4000 meters.
