To see: town & cities

Amelia

Amelia is located in southern Umbria and is one of the oldest cities in the region. It was built by pre-Roman populations as evidenced by the Cyclopean walls known as the Poligonal Walls, which surround it.
The city walls extend to the two sides of Porta Romana, one of the parts of access to the Historical Center.

It then passed under the Roman Domination and traces of the Roman urban fabric are still visible today. Many exhibits are exhibited in the interesting Archaeological Museum, where the beautiful bronze statue of the Roman Germanic Leader is kept, found in an area just outside the city walls. It is one of the most beautiful works of the bronze statuary of the Roman Empire up to the present day.

Another important evidence of the ancient Roman city are the imposing cisterns: these 10 immense rooms placed in the basements at the highest point of the city assured the water supply to the inhabitants. The plant was used until the mid-twentieth century. Currently they are visible thanks to a very interesting guided tour.

The city also played an important role during the Middle Ages and experienced another period of splendor between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries when noble families, mainly of Roman origin, chose it as a summer residence and built sumptuous frescoed palaces.

Some of these still retain their charm and can be visited by appointment. Among these the Petrignani Palace, owned by the city, Venturelli Palace and Farrattini Palace, built according to a design by Antonio da Sangallo the Younger, which have been restructured and transformed into accommodation facilities.

Another particularly interesting place is the nineteenth-century Social Theatre, a small architectural jewel still used today for shows and performances.

Among the many churches in the historic center we mention the church of Saint Francesco and the Cathedral, located at the highest point of the city, next to which stands an ancient and suggestive dodecagonal tower used as a bell tower.

Since part of the treasures of Amelia can be visited only by reservation it is recommended to book a guided tour of the city to fully understand the history and admire its beauty.

The surroundings of the city, known as the Amerini Hills, offer a rich and interesting landscape from the naturalistic point of view. There is produced a delicious olive oil and excellent wines. The intact territory and the beautiful landscapes invite to long walks in the countryside.
