The best e-Bike itineraries in Italy

E-bikes are becoming more and more popular among lovers of two wheels, both for the "fashion" effect they have on fans, and for the fact that even the less trained or so-called "cyclists of Sunday" can try their hand at routes that would be impossible to tackle with a normal muscle bike. The towing effect that exerts the spread of the bike 2.0 (let's call it amicably so), is remarkable, with the birth and above all rediscovery of fascinating routes and paths immersed in a territory, like that of our Peninsula, that has nothing to envy the rest of the planet.

We do not claim the right to know what are the best e-bike routes in Italy, we just suggest someone that we believe to be appealing, fun and certainly interesting! Here is a short list, strictly in geographical order from north to south.

One of the most beautiful routes to travel between May and October in Italy is the one that leads to the discovery of the Valtournenche, in Valle d'Aosta. Nature manifests itself in an extraordinary way and reveals itself under the imposing presence of the Cervino. The route winds through chestnut woods and meadows, fields and mountain villages, ancient water mills and traditional ovens. It is definitely an unforgettable experience.

In Lombardia you can try your hand at what leads to the discovery of the upper city of Bergamo, starting from the foot of the Venete walls, along the Parco dei Colli and the Val d'Astino, you go up to Piazza Vecchia, the heart of the Upper City. After an unmissable stop for an aperitif, we depart in the direction of the city Bassa through Porta San Giacomo.

For lovers of Trentino Alto Adige, the route that leads from Tassullo to Lake Tovel, one of the most famous resorts of the Brenta Dolomiti, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, cannot be forgotten. This is a classic itinerary, which starts from the heart of Tassullo and through the town of Tuenno leads to the small jewel of the Val di Non.

The tireless and adventurous enthusiasts of stage itineraries will find a living for their teeth in the Alpe-Adria Trail. A route of 43 stages and 750 km that crosses three states, from Carinthia in Austria, through Slovenia until descending in Italy and ending in the port of Muggia in Friuli-Venezia Giulia. The route can of course be run from any point - including Trieste - and in both directions; each stage is about 20 km.

Also available in Friuli is the Ciclovia Alpe Adria Radweg, which goes from the Austrian of Salzburg to Grado, a town a few kilometers from Monfalcone. In the Italian territory, the route partly winds along the track of an old disused railway line, which from Tarvisio touches Gemona, Udine, Aquileia and ends in Grado, on the Adriatic.

For a dip in the past you can go to Liguria, cycling along what remains of the ancient Via Julia Augusta. Through this Roman consular road you can see the remains of some monuments, immersed in the Mediterranean maquis and with a panoramic view of the sea until you can see the island of Gallinara. In the section from Albenga to Alassio you travel almost 6 km overlooking the sea, leaving you literally breathless.

The Alta Via dei Monti Liguri is a route created to be walked, winding for 440 km from Ventimiglia to Ceparana (La Spezia) through the entire region. However, with suitable variants, this spectacular route can also be run on two wheels, without forgetting that there are stations for charging e-bikes.

The famous and famous Via degli Dei that joins Bologna to Firenze along the ancient Flaminia Militare, blends myth and history. The Appennini are the background to a 130 km route that runs along the Roman consular road used as a variant "war", whose name is due to the localities that are crossed: Monte Adone, Monzuno (or mountain of Jupiter), Monte Venere and Monte Luario (from the Roman goddess Lua). Precisely for the purpose for which it was conceived and built, some traits are difficult, so it is better to deal with it only if you are experienced and well trained.

As we all know, the Chianti hills between the provinces of Firenze, Siena and Arezzo, are among the most beautiful views of Italy. Here you can ride for 82 km, enjoying a fabulous landscape, alternating pedals to great visits to wineries and wine tastings and local products.

There is the well-known Tirreno-Adriatico, a great classic of road cycling, but there is also the possibility to do the reverse route by e-bike, from the Adriatico to the Tirreno: 440 km to be covered in nine stages to discover central Italy. It is called Italia Coast2coast, a route that connects the two Seas through four regions. We start from Portonovo, near Monte Conero in the province of Ancona, we reach Umbria at the height of Nocera Umbra and continue to Assisi. Then cross the Umbrian Valley, stop in Orvieto and enter Lazio to continue towards Sorano, the first of the "tufa cities" in Tuscany. The last stops are towards the sea, to reach Orbetello.

One of the most growing destinations in recent years is Umbria, which thanks to its mild climate throughout the year is an ideal holiday destination for lovers of e-Bike. The region is rich in water with numerous springs, lakes (such as Trasimeno and Piediluco), the famous Marmore Falls and the Valnerina, where the passion for cycling can be "contaminated" by a thousand other outdoor experiences. Umbria by bike offers many itineraries immersed in the Green Heart of Italy.

What are the best E-BIKE routes for a holiday in Umbria?

Here are the ones we recommend: the former Spoleto-Norcia railway, la Greenway del Nera, the Ciclovia del Tevere and the Via di Francesco.

In Abruzzo there is an extraordinary 20 km route between riverside, dirt road and asphalt road, which make this route one of the most fascinating available to fans. It starts from the sources of the Pescara River and reaches the Gorges of San Venanzio along the riverside. There is a stop at Raiano, characteristic for its sulphurous water, passing by the Hermitage of San Venanzio and Vittorito, finally going back to the riverside to the sources of the river Pescara. The rivers covered by the route are in total 4: Aterno, Saggittario, Pescara and Giardino.

Even the island of Ischia, although not having a real path for e-bikes, lends itself perfectly to an excursion between the sea and nature. Starting from the area of Chiaia we head to the beautiful beach of Sant'Angelo stopping in Forio, famous for being one of the few places in the world where it is visible, at sunset, the optical phenomenon of the green beam. Then continue to the Poseidon Thermal Gardens and finally arrive at the beach. It is a pleasant ride, without too much difficulty, made even more beautiful by the atmosphere of Ischia and its beautiful landscapes.

Also in Campania, this time on the mainland, the Via Francigena awaits you, which as soon as it enters the region meets the Dormiente del Sannio. The name comes from the characteristic shape of the Taburno massif, as if it were a stylized image of a woman lying down, called "the Sleeper". The total duration is about three and a half hours, for a total of 35 km from Montesarchio to Vitulano.

Moving to Basilicata, we find the Materano Way, consisting of 4 routes (the Via Peuceta, the Via Ellenica, the Via Sveva and the Via Dauna) that allow you to leave from Bari, Brindisi, Lucera or Trani and reach the Cathedral of the Madonna della Bruna in Matera, following historical paths and ancient sheep tracks. It is 170 km of walk among trulli, masserie, cathedrals, medieval villages and rock churches, which allow travelers to discover the beauty and vastness of the Apulian and Lucan heritage.

Of course, our beloved main islands also offer routes for enthusiasts.

The Zingaro Nature Reserve in Sicily grants 7 km of unspoilt nature along the coast. Cross the Reserve starting from its two entrances, the one to the north near San Vito Lo Capo or the one to the south in Scopello. It's a path that winds through the dwarf palms symbol of the reserve, hoping to spot the rare eagle of Bonelli. It goes without saying that along the way it is mandatory to stop in one of the wonderful coves that leave you breathless.

Finally, also in Sardinia we find an interesting route that leads to the discovery of Supramonte. Starting from Funtana Bona, you pass Monte Novo San Giovanni, Honeai, Sa Sinipida and the stony ramps of Arzane, you enter the limestone massif of Supramonte. The itinerary is ring-shaped, so it ends back to the starting point.

As already mentioned, this above is only a small part of the many e-Bike itineraries in Italy.
Cycling allows you to enjoy beautiful landscapes not reachable by other means of transport, giving you the opportunity to spend a "slow" holiday that is able to combine well-being and nature, choosing which route is best suited to your tastes, to your needs and abilities!
