The area of Lake Trasimeno and its hills preserves an extraordinary winemaking tradition, favored by a mild and breezy microclimate. The area's main protagonist is Gamay del Trasimeno, a native black grape variety that, despite its name, has no ties to French Gamay but boasts centuries-old origins linked to local history.
In its youth, it has a bright ruby red color and fresh aromas of cherry, raspberry, and berries; on the palate, it is dry, rounded, and has extremely silky tannins, while the Riserva versions evolve towards spicy notes, displaying greater structure and depth.
This grape variety is the flagship of DOC Colli del Trasimeno, a versatile appellation that protects a wide range of types: from whites based on the local Grechetto, to fresh and harmonious rosés, up to sparkling wines and structured reds derived from blends with Sangiovese and Merlot.
From a gastronomic point of view, young Gamay pairs beautifully with traditional Umbrian first courses, cured meats and white meats, while the fuller-bodied versions enhance the red meats, game and aged cheeses. Whites and rosés, on the other hand, are perfect to accompany the lake's freshwater fish.
Planning a wine tour through the medieval villages of Castiglione del Lago, Magione, and Panicale offers a unique wine tourism experience, where winery tastings blend with the beauty of a hilly landscape gently sloping down to the water.
